Pap Tests

A pap test is a screening test used to detect cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV).  Cervical cancer is preventable, through regular screening. There are also vaccines used for the prevention of some cervical cancers (see the Immunization section of this website).

According to the updated Ontario cancer screening guidelines, pap tests are recommended every three years for sexually active women over the age of 21. Certain high risk individuals require screening at shorter intervals.
